Cathedral of Our-Lady

Open from Monday to Saturday from 10 to 12 a.m. and from 2 to 5.30 p.m., on Sunday from 2 to 5.30 p.m., except during services.

The cathedral of Notre-Dame was built between 1613 and 1621 by the Jesuits to serve as a church to their college (now the National Library). The north gate is characteristic of the semi-Renaissance, semi-Baroque style of the period. Since 1794, it has housed the statue of the Consoler of the Afflicted. A cathedral church in 1870, it was enlarged from 1935 to 1938.

The choir screen in richly sculpted alabaster, columns decorated with arabesques, stained glass from the 19th and 20th centuries, neo-Gothic confessionals, modern sculptures in bas relief, bronze gates by Auguste Trémont, are all worthy of this splendid sanctuary. The crypt is the resting place of John the Blind, King of Bohemia and Count of Luxembourg, as well as deceased members of the Grand Ducal family; the two lions flanking the entrance are also the work of Auguste Trémont.

Théâtre des Capucins

The earliest days of theatre in Luxembourg date back to the time of the Jesuits, who came to Luxembourg at the end of the 16th century. However, it would be necessary to wait until 1855 to see the birth of Luxembourg theatrical life with the performance of "Scholdschäin" by Edmond de la Fontaine (Dicks), the first play in Luxembourgish.

Since then, plays in Luxembourgish have been a constant success with audiences; they range from vaudeville to modern critical theatre. The Luxembourg theatres also offer a wide range of plays in French or German, or even in English, Dutch or Portuguese, performed by famous foreign companies and Luxembourg-based expatriates.

It should be noted that revues in the French, German or Luxembourgish languages contribute to an intense cultural life.

Philharmonie Luxembourg (salle de concert Grande-Duchesse Josephine Charlotte)

The concert schedule is available on the website of the Philharmonie.

The ticketing office is open weekdays from 10:00 to 18:30. The box office opens one hour prior to the start of the concerts and remains open during intermission. Tel.: +352 26 32 26 32, Fax: +352 26 32 26 33.

From its spectacular architecture, designed by Christian de Portzamparc, the Luxembourg Philharmonic has one mission: to facilitate access to its high quality programme to Luxembourg’s public and the surrounding region, to stimulate the cultural scene with a rich and varied artistic programme which will be characterised by its quality, to strengthen ties between composers, musicians and the public and to encourage the audience to consider listening itself as an active contribution in the process of creation.

The official opening of the ‘Grande-Duchesse Joséphine-Charlotte’ Concert Hall took place on 26th June 2005 with the creation of the 8th symphony of Krzysztof Penderecki. This concert by the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra marked the start of a week of opening celebrations: a public festival of music and sound which exceeded many expectations: 750 musicians played for a total of 15,038 visitors which is equivalent to an exploitation rate of 98.65%.

During the first hundred days of the regular operation of the 2005/2006 Season, there were 132 performance: from Riccardo Muti with the Philharmonic Orchestra to Lorin Maazel with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra; from Goran Bregovic to Maceo Parker; from Grigoy Sokolov to the numerous theatrical concerts for children; the aim was to create a concert hall for everyone, young and old alike. The three rooms with capacities from 100 to 1,300 people, have enabled 49,075 spectators to experience exceptional concerts, introductions to concerts, meetings with artists and, more generally, high quality and varied musical experiences.

For the 64,000 people who visited the Luxembourg Philharmonic during the first days, it was their curiosity and the open spirit with which they approached the offer by the Luxembourg Philharmonic and its partner organisations that brought pleasure. It was precisely this openness of spirit and curiosity which show that Luxembourg and its surrounding regions derive pleasure from the satisfaction of a musical need and that the Luxembourg Philharmonic has good times ahead, both during this season and those that will follow.

Théâtre National du Luxembourg

An emerging theatre. A theatre in the heart of Europe.

The THEATRE NATIONAL DU LUXEMBOURG.

A theatre that "dances on the borderline", as one leading newspaper wrote.

The THEATRE NATIONAL DU LUXEMBOURG was founded in 1996 and opened on 1 October 1997 with "A Dream Play” by August Strindberg, directed by Frank Hoffmann.

As the THEATRE NATIONAL is devoted to both drama and music, it produces a number of plays and operas in German, French and Luxembourg every season. Classical writers, viewed from the spirit of our time, stand side by side with modern authors whom the Theâtre National also tries to promote by commissioning works and organising a market for pieces and plays every two years at which new, unpublished texts are read aloud by actors and discovered for the stage.

After the wild dance of the first four years in a variety of locations, theatres, squares, halls, factories and tents across the entire country, after invitations to festivals in Stockholm (1998) and Sibiu (Romania, 1999), as  well as Weimar, European city of culture in 1999, after performances all over Europe, from Paris to Frankfurt, Mannheim, Berlin, Lausanne, Graz and Volterra in Italy, Plovdiv in Bulgaria and Budva in Montenegro – after the wild dance of the first four years, the Theâtre National du Luxembourg found its place, its theatre, its hall, its factory, and its time: an old smithy in the centre of Luxembourg city, converted into a theatre and opened in the 2004/ 2005 season.

The THEATRE NATIONAL DU LUXEMBOURG is on the one hand a creative, innovative theatre brought to life by young, dynamic artists. But it also receives the great theatre people of our time. The smithy will give all these people a space to work to perform.

Fortress Museum « Dräi Eechelen »

The transformation of "Dräi Eechelen" (Three Acorns), the nick name for Fort Thüngen, into a Museum has required major renovation work. Partially hidden underground following the demolition in 1867 and covered with abundant vegetation, the fort and its surroundings are today the subject of excavation, restoration and rebuilding work with the aim of returning them to their former glory, whilst integrating a contemporary museum space. The Museum, including the underground gallery, forms an integral part of the Vauban Circuit. The museography to come will depict an attractive combination of the fortification legacy in Luxembourg, the history of the Grand Duchy, and the different aspects of its national identity.
