Theatre:

GRAND THEÂTRE
Originally built in the sixties to mark the millennium of the City of Luxembourg, the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg underwent a major facelift and refurbishment, reopening its doors in 2003. Five years on, the Grand Théâtre presents and co-produces opera, music-theatre, dance and theatre productions. For opera lovers, the 2009-2010 season will offer a delightful mix including works by Händel, Offenbach, Dusapin, Haydn and, for the first time, Wagner. Dance fans will relish the privilege of two world premieres with MM by Gauthier Dance featuring Egon Madsen on one hand and the highly anticipated Création 2010 by  Frédéric Flamand, designed by Chinese architect and visual artist Ai Weiwei. If that wasn’t enough, the Grand Théâtre will also present companies Montalvo- Hervieu, Sasha Waltz & Guests, the Nederlands Dans Theater, Akram Khan and Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker. From Burkina Faso to Kinshasa, via Senegal and Marocco, the young generation of African choreographers will  certainly fill the stages with their devilishly rhythmical and passionate evenings of African dance. Finally, theatre-lovers won’t be disappointed by the vast choice of French, German and English plays on offer during the 2009-2010 season.

Reopening of the Villa Vauban - Luxembourg City Art Museum

After 5 years of extensive renovation, the villa Vauban is open to the public! The buildings are surrounded by a park, which was designed by French landscape architect Édouard André, one of the leading landscape   planners of the late 19th century. Thus, the museum invites you to enjoy art in a relaxing atmosphere in the heart of Luxembourg city. Changing exhibition formats, while at all times focusing on the collections themselves, will provide visitors with constantly new insights, introducing them to different focal points and distinctive aspects of the collection: Dutch paintings from the Golden Age (17th century), 19th-century French historical and landscape paintings as well as paintings, sculptures and drawings by European artists from the 17th to the 19th century. The inventory is based on three 19th-century bourgeois collections, all excellent examples of their time. Visitors are met with a diverse and innovative programme of activities surrounding the art on display. Furthermore, the museum regularly provides art consultations for art lovers and collectors.

Forever young
Youth cultures since the 1950ies
Musée d’Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg
Youth is characterized by its extreme diversity. Every generation has its own fashion, music, places. Rock’n’roll, the hippies,  968, Punk or Techno and Hip-Hop have also been given expression in Luxembourg. But beyond the variety of youth subcultures, there are things that bother all young people: sexuality, protest, search for identity. The exhibition “Forever young” explores what it means to “be young” by showing how the “youth phenomenon” has developed since the 1950s.

Ceci n’est pas un Casino !
Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain
Right from the start, the name of “Casino” has been misleading, for one associates it with a place for gambling rather than with a place dedicated to contemporary art. Almost every day gamblers pop in at Casino Luxembourg in the hope to hit the jackpot.   The title of the exhibition Ceci n’est pas un Casino! (This is not a gambling casino!) draws from the ambiguity of the art institution’s name: it asserts through negation what Casino Luxembourg is not, while at the same time the works presented in the exhibition all deal with the various aspects of game, thereby annihilating the statement of the exhibition title. On the occasion of this exhibition, contemporary artists will convert Casino Luxembourg into an over-dimensional playground.
Curators: Jo Kox, Kevin Muhlen

26.09.10 – 09.01.11
Bruno Peinado
Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain
On the occasion of the exhibition Sous les ponts, le long de la rivière II (2005), Bruno Peinado’s slogan Born to be mild,  arranged as a flower bed, drew the attention of the strollers in the Petrusse valley. In his work, the artist appropriates the language and signs of popular culture and art history as well as of music and film in order to restore them in the most various ways in his installations. By drawing from this very particular visual fields and by making use of known icons, Bruno Peinado catches our eye while at the same time he clouds the issue. The mixing and hybridization at work in the artist’s installations convey a new identity and a new meaning to largely known references.

All year round
Cupid surprising Psyche at night
Musée national d’histoire et d’art
In 2008, the National Museum of History and Art acquired an oil painting by Dutch painter Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651),  representing “Cupid surprising Psyche at night”. Abraham Bloemaert was a painter of history, portraits, religious subjects and mythological scenes, renowned also for his drawings and known as a Mannerist, Caravaggesque and academic artist. The period around 1590 saw historical painters such as Cornelis van Haarlem, Abraham Bloemaert and Joachim Wtewael produce a number of dramatic and extremely large-scale works, stunning their contemporaries. The story of Cupid and Psyche is not strictly speaking a myth, but was told by Apuleius in his “Metamorphoses”. For Psyche, Bloemaert drew inspiration from Michelangelo’s subjects, among others.
