Discover the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg by train and bus!

In the 19th century several viaducts were built to lead the railway around the fortification towards the central station. This probably offers the most beautiful panoramic view on the Old Town and fortifications of Luxembourg City, added in 1994 to UNESCO's list of "World Cultural Heritage".

Besides the reasonably priced day ticket for the entire public transportation network (4.-€ per person), the “LuxembourgCard” is the ideal key to explore the places of interest of the entire country. This tourist pass is available from January till December for 1, 2 or 3 days. It allows everyone to customize a day program, since not only does it give free entrance to 58 tourist attractions, but it also provides free public transportation! The family pass is a real bargain, as up to 5 people only have to pay the price for two individual visitors. Prices and details are available on the Internet page http://www.luxembourgcard.lu/ !

The enchanting train ride from Luxembourg City to Clervaux, situated in the Luxembourg Ardennes, takes less then one hour. Here, a second cultural treasure of Luxembourg awaits: the legendary photo collection “The Family of Man” (open until 26th of september 2010). The exhibit, first shown at the New York “Museum of Modern Art” in 1955, was included in the UNESCO-list "Memory of the World "register in 2003. This permanent exhibition can be visited daily, except on Mondays, from March till September  inside the feudal castle of Clervaux, which is only a ten minute walk away from the Clervaux train station. Halfway on their trip, travellers can make a stop in the charming town of Ettelbrück, to enjoy shopping in the biggest pedestrian zone of the northern part of the country. During the voyage, the scenery offers surprises to the attentive eye. After each tunnel , a new panorama of the widespread Alzette valley or the secluded Sûre valley is to be discovered.

The 71 well marked walking and cycling routes, leading from one train station to the next, are very popular. The loose-leaf binder entitled “Train, walk, cycle” from the Luxembourg Railways (CFL) is available for 19.-€ at the „Shop“ of the National Tourist Office's Internet page www.visitluxembourg.lu.

Footpaths also link the Luxembourg Youth Hostels. Thanks to their increased comfort and leisure activities, they represent an alternative for family vacations. Special offers for bikers and hikers can be found on their Internet page http://www.youthhostels.lu/.

Also check the “Hiking without luggage” packages offered by hotel associations in the Luxembourg Ardennes or in the region Mullerthal, Luxembourg's Little Switzerland (“Mullerthal-trail”). Even less experienced hikers can  discover a number of the well signed footpaths, cut the path and return to their staring point by bus.

Several of the 575 km national cycling tracks throughout the country follow former railroads. Huge railroad bridges, illuminated tunnels as well as a clever signposting border these paths. These cycling tracks are connected to several train stations, in towns such as Wiltz, Ettelbrück, Diekirch, Mersch, Petange or Wasserbillig on the Mosel River. Cyclists can also use the ferry between Wasserbillig (LUX) and Oberbillig (GER) or combinetheir trip with a voyage on board the floating restaurant “Princesse Marie-Astrid” (www.marie-astrid.lu)

Luxembourg offers further highlights for railway freaks. Close to the CFL station in Pétange is the the starting-point of the “Train 1900”. (http://www.train1900.lu/) On Sundays and public holidays, between May and September, a steam- or diesel train drives you to the picturesque  "Fond de Gras” (www.fond-de-gras.lu). Also, the association “1604 classic asbl” offers tailor-made trips in historic wagons in and around the Grand Duchy for group tours.
