Visit Luxembourg

The Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg is an independent sovereign state, a constitutional monarchy which is hereditary in the house of Nassau.

While Luxembourg can be called a "Gift of Iron", the economic structure of the Grand Duchy nowadays rests on banking and insurance, telecommunications, and many small and middle sized industries. Agriculture and vine growing are also very important.

The population is about 500.000. One third of the country, which measures 2587 square kilometres or about 1000 square miles, is covered with forests. Geographically the Grand Duchy is divided into 2 sections: in the North the uplands of the Ardennes, a hilly and scenically beautiful region, in the South the Good Land, mainly rolling farmlands and woods bordered in the East by the grapegrowing Valley of the Moselle. The former mining district is concentrated in the extreme South of the country.

Luxembourg is essentially a Roman Catholic country, but there are Protestant and Jewish communities in the more important towns. The population is bilingual, or even trilingual. Luxembourgeois is the everyday language. French and German are spoken by everyone, and many people speak English too.

Luxembourg - in the heart of Europe

Due to its central location in Europe, Luxembourg is easily reached either by car or by the TGV train. In addition, Luxembourg has upgraded its international airport to welcome its visitors in the best way possible.

The 5 regions
1. Luxembourg, the capital city and surroundings
2. The Ardennes and their Natural Parks
3. Mullerthal Region: Luxemburg's Little Switzerland
4. The Moselle
5. The land of the Red Rocks

Luxembourg, with its charming contrasts, is a city loaded with history, overflowing with artistic and cultural gems which demand to be admired, with plenty of interesting sites and picturesque locations which demand to be explored, full of anecdotes and legends which demand to be told.

And what other European capitals can pride themselves on being just a stone’s throw from impressive green landscapes, or welcoming villages which have retained their former character?

In this respect, the Europa Nostra prize awarded to the restored village of Useldange owes nothing to chance.  As its name indicates, the valley of Sept Châteaux (Seven Castles) invites you to make a journey through history and nature, from Koerich and its baroque church to Mersch.

The walkable Luxembourg Ardennes

High plains with extensive fields, slate rocks and steep sloping valleys which display the most glorious colours in autumn and are strewn with gorse in spring: that is the view which can be expected from the Luxembourg Ardennes. All around the “Nordstad”, the gateway to the Ardennes, with the towns and villages along the Sûre, the Wark and the Alzette, the hiker discovers the unique interplay between geology and nature alongside culture and history. Numerous castles and palaces transport you to another world.

The Luxembourg Ardennes: also the region of nature parks, of the lake of the Upper-Sûre and of the Our valley.

This extremely varied area, from the “Nordstad” (Diekirch, Ettelbruck) region of the Luxembourg Ardennes, also called “Oesling“, poses a rare challenge for nature lovers, mountain bikers, Nordic walkers and above all for ramblers.

With its numerous well-signposted local, national and international rambling paths, it can justifiably be called a true ramblers’ paradise.

Marvel, experience and enjoy – this region offers everything for a restorative holiday rich in experience!

You can marvel at the distinctive characteristics of the landscape: bizarre rock formations, mossy stream valleys and wonderful views entice you to make discoveries and go rambling.

You can experience the diverse culture in and around Echternach: museums, churches and castles give information about the past. The Dancing Procession rich in tradition is a special experience for every visitor.

You can enjoy the culinary delights: regional products such as cheese, honey and liqueurs can be bought in the markets. And the numerous restaurants and cafés offer both regional and international specialities.

Appealing, unrestricted and stress-free – the Moselle valley stimulates the senses, connects people of different nationalities and enables you to switch off from everyday life.

The Romans saw it as a unrestricted region covered with vines, influenced by the meanderings of the Moselle. Here, with its inter-connecting bridges, you will find the birthplace of the “Schengen area“.

Ambling stress-free along narrow paths and through narrow alleys, or discovering the Mosel area on a boat trip, is more relaxing than travelling on the beaten track.

Industrial culture and shopping

The “Land of the Red Rocks“, previously overwhelmingly industrial in nature, is today incorporated into Luxembourg’s urban Shopping Mile. Trendy, funky, young and daring. That’s how you could describe the “City Area“ of the Grand-Duchy where international research, culture, trade, services and industry all come together. A melting pot of over 150 nations guarantees an urban lifestyle for adventurers and pleasure-seekers.
