ART MUSEUMS

"d’stater muséeën": The city and its museums

Besides its picturesque site and the remains of its ancient fortress, Luxembourg City distinguishes itself by its rich and varied cultural offering. The walking tours to discover its charms can easily be extended by one or more visits to museums and art centres, true gems of art and history, before topping off the evening by a music concert, theatre show, dance performance, conference or literary cabaret.

National Museum of History and Art, Luxembourg

The museums of the capital are federated in a group known as "d’stater muséeën". In the brochure entitled "A big smile for a small mile / One mile, 7 museums", the city’s museums that are part of this association give a brief description of their site and suggest ideas for making visits easier. Come and experience the culture of Luxembourg ... and (s)mile.

Every year the group organises two major events: in autumn (second Saturday in October) ‘La Nuit des Musées’ (‘Museum Night’), which allows one to visit the exhibitions as well as discover never before seen creations, concerts and performances; in spring ‘L’Invitation aux Musées’ (‘Invitation to the Museums’), is an open door weekend featuring special guided tours, workshops, meetings and themed walking tours.

LUXEMBOURG
CASINO LUXEMBOURG - FORUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Throughout the year, the Casino Luxembourg - Forum d’Art Contemporain organises exhibitions on modern international art, underlining the diversity and complexity of current trends. The name of the art centre was inspired from the building in which it is housed, the former ‘Casino Bourgeois’, a Neo-Baroque building built at the end of the 19th century, adorning Art Deco elements. Since the beginning, the building has been an important cultural meeting point for the city, housing diverse artistic activities and cosmopolitan parties. Among others, Franz Liszt gave an impromptu recital there in 1886, the last public performance of the famous composer deceased a few weeks later in Bayreuth.

In the mid-20th century, the Casino was bought back by the Luxembourg State and renamed ‘Foyer Européen’ (‘European Foyer’). Until 1990 it remained the centre of cultural and worldly events of the European Community in Luxembourg. In the scope of ‘Luxembourg, European Capital of Culture 1995’, the building was transformed into an exhibition space. Within a short time, white cubes were inserted into the halls, interacting ingeniously with the ancient walls, its stucco and ornaments. This transformation helped welcome the most prestigious exhibitions of the cultural year. It is as an extension of this very successful experience that the Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’Art Contemporain association was created and started its activity in 1996.

Its programming emphasises collective and themed exhibitions where new discoveries rub shoulders with the great names of contemporary art in presentations wanting to emphasise the originality and pertinence of artistic trends. In doing so, numerous artists known today have benefited from a first major monographic presentation at the Casino Luxembourg. All the exhibitions are completed by a varied programme of guided and themed visits, conferences, discussions and meetings with contemporary music – the latter often paying tribute to Franz Liszt.

Open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 AM to 6 PM, and Thursday from 11 AM to 8 PM.

LUXEMBOURG
MUSEUM OF HISTORY OF LUXEMBOURG CITY (MHVL)

The Luxembourg City History Museum, located at the heart of the old city features permanent collections and temporary exhibitions illustrating the very ancient history of the capital of the Grand Duchy in an original manner. The site chosen to house this museum is a set of four ancient manors featuring remains dating back to the Middle Ages. The museum’s architecture is striking due to its verticality, reflection of the city’s configuration, characterised by the contrast between the higher town and lower town. Visitors can discover exhibitions on six levels, linked by a panoramic lift, which allows them to cross through an entire urban stratification.

In the permanent exhibition "Luxembourg, une ville s'expose" (Luxembourg, a city on display), you can explore the urban development of the city in great detail by means of tactile screens and faithful topographic reconstructions, and find out about the city’s most recent history on the basis of five themes (Power, Economy, Environment, Hygiene, Europe). Six urban models - 1000, 1500, 1683, 1795, 1867, 1910 – make the museum the ideal starting point for visiting the city and the fortress of Luxembourg.

Major temporary exhibitions are organised on the three upper storeys of the museum, covering societal subjects in line with the current concerns of its multicultural visitors, both local and foreign.

LUXEMBOURG
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND ART

Besides several temporary exhibitions featured every year, the National Art and History Museum houses the national archaeological, historical and artistic collections. The itinerary is spread over 10 levels and is chronological. From prehistory to the most recent artistic feats, visitors climb the floors as if they were going through the halls of time. The halls dedicated to archaeology show the evolution of the human presence on the national territory, from prehistoric remains to the end of the Middle Ages. Among the jewels one can note a series of impressive aristocratic tombs from the end of the Iron Age or the famous Roman mosaic of Vichten, depicting Orpheus surrounded by the nine muses.

The numismatic exhibition shows a representative sample of Celtic, Roman, Medieval and modern minting. The artistic collections combine ancient paintings, including the famous ‘Bacchus, Venus and Love’ (around 1530-31) by Rosso Fiorentino, as well as Luxembourg and foreign modern and contemporary artworks. The sections dedicated to the decorative arts and arts & popular traditions are housed in ancient urban houses of the 17th and 18th centuries next to the new main building that was inaugurated in 2002.

Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM.

LUXEMBOURG
MUSEUM OF MODERN ART GRAND DUKE JEAN (MUDAM)

Imagined by the famous Chinese American architect Ieoh Ming Pei, famous for his Louvre Pyramid, Mudam Luxembourg-Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean deploys its magnificent silhouette in the middle of a sea of green just a few steps away from the European quarter. Its collections and exhibitions of internationally renowned contemporary art transport visitors to the heart of modern art.

Mudam Luxembourg-Museum d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean is a place entirely created by artists for the public. When it opened in July 2006, Mudam gave the artists free reign to take on the traditional exhibitions spaces as well as the functional spaces (entrance hall, cafe, shop, documentation centre, etc.). The exceptional architecture and a collection of world-renowned contemporary art mark Luxembourg’s impressive commitment in matters of cultural infrastructures. This is why Mudam Collection contains works of significant modern artists.

It is shown in the scope of loans throughout the world and displayed at the Mudam during temporary exhibitions on the chosen themes. The interior of this high place of culture regularly evolves, making the Mudam a place to meet and discover that is always innovative.

LUXEMBOURG
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY - "naturmusée"

After having served successively as a hospital and a women’s prison, the Hospice Saint-Jean in the beautiful Grund suburb whose history goes back to 1308, has been housing the Museum of National History since 1996. Integrating perfectly into the unusual architecture of this historic building, the Museum of National History is first and foremost a window onto the landscapes and regions of the Grand Duchy.

Here, visitors picture themselves in the middle of Luxembourg forests, following the evolution of nature through the seasons and feeling concerned by their environment. The museum invites visitors to learn more about our past and that of our planet. A visit therefore becomes an interactive journey through 15 billion years of evolution, going from the birth of the universe to current ecological problems.

The permanent exhibitions revolve around three main questions: Who am I? - Questioning humanity, its uniqueness, behaviour and impact on the environment. However, since the beginning, man has been destroying its environment. Confronted with this reality, visitors find themselves with a capital choice: Respect the laws of nature or be the cause of one of the greatest extinctions of all times. Where am I? - An itinerary in the landscapes and regions of the Grand Duchy: living close to nature, admiring the beauty of Luxembourg’s landscapes, hearing all kinds of familiar sounds, caring about one’s environment. Where do I come from? - A trip through time to discover the universe, planet Earth and the evolution of human beings who have populated it for millions of years.

LUXEMBOURG
VILLA VAUBAN - MUSEUM OF ART OF LUXEMBOURG CITY

The Villa Vauban is the city of Luxembourg’s new Art Museum. It opened on 1 May 2010 following five years of renovation and extension work. The 19th–century Villa with its modern-day extension lies at the heart of the city, in the midst of a historic park that is the ideal place to relax.

The temporary exhibitions organised at the Villa Vauban draw from the collections of the city of Luxembourg, which are largely made up of Dutch works from the 17th century on the one hand and French historical and landscape paintings from the 19th century on the other. The main works are by artists such as Jan Steen, Gerrit Dou, David Teniers, Antonio Canaletto, Eugène Delacroix and Gustave Courbet.

"Nature morte", Hendrik Reekers (1815-1854)

The museum gives preference to variable exhibition formats, so that works can be explored from different angles: the collectors, novel aspects and the “life” of the paintings, authors, subjects, etc. The temporary exhibitions include items on loan from major international collections.

A varied programme of cultural activities centred around the exhibitions awaits visitors.

LUXEMBOURG
MUSEUM "DRÄI EECHELEN"

The ‘Dräi Eechelen’ (‘Three acorns’), a dismantled small dwelling of Fort Thüngen built in 1732 by the Austrians then crowned by the Prussians in 1836 with its three characteristic acorns, was an idyllic holiday resort for more than a century, holding national celebrations and theatrical creations before being transformed into a modern museological space by the Wilmotte-Paris agency, interior architect and museographer of the Grand Louvre. The Dräi Eechelen Future Park, designed by Parisian landscape artist Michel Desvigne, as well as the future Vauban cultural itinerary, will create an organic link between the Dräi Eechelen Museum and the spectacular historical remains of Forts Ober and Niedergrünewald as well as of Hiehl, between the Old City, the beautiful Clausen-Pfaffenthal suburbs and the new European quarter of Kirchberg.

Operated by the Documentation Centre on the Luxembourg fortress, the Dräi Eechelen Museum will tell and explain the specifics of the Luxembourg fortress as concerns the history of the city, the territorial formation of the country and cultural identity of the nation. The Luxembourg fortress is much more than some unique architecture worthy of being added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List: it is an entire era, through which the secular opposition of the major European powers gave birth to the current Grand Duchy and to an independent national identity.

CLERVAUX
THE FAMILIY OF MAN

"A portrait of Humanity, and a plea for humanity".

The exhibition "The Family of Man" will remain closed for renovation works.

Edward Steichen was born in 1879 in Bivange/Luxembourg. At the age of 2, he emigrated with his parents to the United States, where he later embarked on his career as a photographer. Soon he had established a worldwide reputation: the star photographer in society magazines like "Vanity Fair" and "Vogue", portraitist of countless celebrities. During the Second World War, he was the Director of the Photographic Department of the US Navy, then continued his career as an advertising and theatre photographer.

As Director of the Photography Section of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York, he realised his most ambitious project: the exhibition "The Family of Man". In 1966, Steichen asked the American authorities to allow the travelling exhibition to be located permanently in Luxembourg. This "Patriarch of Photography" ((L. Fritz Gruber) died in 1973 in West Redding (Connecticut) at the age of 94. In 1953, right in the middle of the Cold War, Edward Steichen started a project which he himself described as the most ambitious in his life: an exhibition that was to be a portrait of Humanity in its entirely, transcending frontiers of nations, religions, ideology or mentality, and showing human life in all its aspects: from birth, via family life, friendship, leisure, as well as illness, war and death. Of over two million photos examined, only 503 had the privilege of being included in the exhibition: these photos are from 68 countries, taken both by world-famous and anonymous photographers.

From its premiere in 1955 in New York, The Family of Man broke all records for attendances. In six versions, the exhibition started a world tour, travelling through 68 countries and admired by over nine million visitors. After essential restoration work on the photographs, the photographic event of the 1950s can once again be admired in its original splendour.

Optimal storage conditions, interactive terminals and an audio-guide system ("Expo talk") specially designed for the occasion have been provided to show off this unique masterpiece on display in the Chateau of Clervaux, which Steichen considered "a nice place". "The Family of Man" was listed as World Heritage by UNESCO in 2004.

Open from 1.3 to 31.12, from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 AM to 6 PM. From Easter to Mid-September also on Monday. The gallery is closed in January and February. Guided visits on appointment.
