Luxembourg was always a rustic country whose prosperity relied on agriculture and crafts. Even the towns under the Ancien Régime were rural market towns. From the 18th century onward, agriculture and viticulture experienced unprecedented expansion, thanks to the development of livestock and arable farming techniques, and developed high-quality products that now bear the "marque nationale" quality label.
