LUXEMBOURG "Schueberfouer" Late August - early September Die "Schueberfouer", seit 1340 in Luxemburg-Stadt ist mit 2 Millionen Besuchern Luxemburgs grösstes Volksfest. Grande parade militaire à l’avenue de la Liberté le matin de la Fête Nationale (après le Te Deum). LUXEMBOURG/NOSPELT Eimäischen Easter Monday "Eimäischen". Every Easter Monday, this traditional market brings the streets of Luxembourg’s old town to life, as well as the village of Nospelt (‘Bon Pays’ region of the south) where pottery was once a principal profession. Collectors like to come here each year to buy a ‘Péckvillchen’, a clay bird whistle which symbolises the return of Spring. Tel. +352 46 61 88 or +352 32 82 57 ECHTERNACH Procession Dansante Whit Tuesday The Echternach Dancing Procession, a religious parade in honour of St. Willibrord, dates back to the Middle Ages and takes place each year on Pentecost Tuesday. Nowadays, some 12,000 pilgrims take part in this procession through the city, jumping from leg to leg to the rhythm of an endlessly repetitive polka melody. The procession ends at the crypt of the basilica before the tomb of St. Willibrord. VIANDEN Fête Médiévale Beginning of August (1 week) "Mediaeval Feast" at the Vianden castle. The largest feudal castle in the ‘Grande Région’ area opens its doors to the country’s largest mediaeval feast. For some ten days in August, sixty artists plunge visitors into the day to day life of the Middle Ages. A show of ‘sound and light’ closes the event. This charming Ardennes village is transformed into an arts workshop on the day of the National Festival (23rd June), bringing together a hundred painters. Exhibitions in 8 barns. WILTZ Fête du Genêt Whitsun "Gënzefest - Broom Flower Festival" in Wiltz. Every Monday in Pentecost, a long floral procession is organised to mark the blossoming of the broom in the Ardennes region of Luxembourg. For two hours, floats, musical groups and folk groups parade through the Ardennes city. The theme of the parade changes from year to year. Tel. +352 26 95 00 32 Internet: www.geenzefestwiltz.lu GRAND-DUCHE DE LUXEMBOURG Fête des Brandons The straw torch celebration "Burgbrennen" is a tradition that heralds the end of winter and the beginning of spring. This time-honoured custom is deeply rooted in the culture of Luxemburg. It is traditionally celebrated on the first Sunday of Lent. The Catholic Church marked the beginning of the Lenten season with its own symbols and signs. Tradition has it that young people in the village went knocking on doors in order to store up straw, wood and brush to make a huge straw fire in the valley of the Pétrusse at nightfall. The celebration starts around noon and is a perfect opportunity to taste traditional and multicultural specialities. GREVENMACHER Fête du Vin et du Raisin 2nd weekend in September "Wäifest - Festival of Wine and Grapes" in Grevenmacher. The highlight of the biggest wine festival in Luxembourg, organised on the 2nd weekend of September, is a folk parade with decorated floats, bands and the ‘Queen of the Wine’ on the Sunday afternoon. During the traditional market of nuts which runs on the 2nd Sunday in October in the mediaeval streets of the Ardennes, a wide range of nut-based products are on sale: from nutty breads to pralines to nut-based liqueur!
