GRAND-DUCHE DE LUXEMBOURG
Fête des Brandons

The straw torch celebration "Burgbrennen" is a tradition that heralds the end of winter and the beginning of spring.

This time-honoured custom is deeply rooted in the culture of Luxemburg. It is traditionally celebrated on the first Sunday of Lent. The Catholic Church marked the beginning of the Lenten season with its own symbols and signs.  Tradition has it that young people in the village went knocking on doors in order to store up straw, wood and brush to make a huge straw fire in the valley of the Pétrusse at nightfall.  The celebration starts around noon and is a perfect opportunity to taste traditional and multicultural specialities.
